Nevada Gets “D” Grade for Infant Mortality

Local organizations launches program to increase prenatal care in response to March of Dimes report card

November 12, 2011— Nevada was given a D grade by the March of Dimes as 13.8 percent of new births were pre-term according to March of Dimes’ national and birth report cards.

In response to this report, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated has partnered with the local March of Dimes chapter and Family to Family to launch the grand opening of Stork’s Nest.

Stork’s Nest is a program designed to increase prenatal care participation and healthy behaviors during the pregnancy through two components – incentives and education.

Over 27,000 births occurred in Nevada during 2010. Nearly one in seven of them is born prematurely which partly contributed to the approximate total of 14,000 deaths for that year.

“Premature births are the leading cause of newborns dying in the United States,” said Kali Miller Esq., president of Henderson chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. “With the rising number of unemployment and limited access to health care, the Stork’s Nest provides incentives for women to insure a safe, full-term pregnancy.”

The grand opening will begin at 1pm, Saturday, Nov. 19 inside Family to Family on 150 Water Street

Henderson. Clients will register onsite, have the opportunity to attend introductory classes and meet with medical professionals.

“The March of Dimes Nevada Chapter is so proud and excited for the grand opening of Stork’s Nest,” said Michelle Gorelow, director of program services for the March of Dimes. “This program will expand necessary resources in the community to educate more women on how to have a healthy pregnancy.”

The program is free and clients “earn” points toward incentives such as car seats and clothing. Points are earned by participating in a variety of positive, health-promoting activities such as attending prenatal care appointments, participating in prenatal education classes, and keeping appointments for well-baby visits.
