SATURDAY: REP. HORSFORD TO PARTICIPATE IN AFFORDABLE CARE ACT TOWN HALL AND COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR

North Las Vegas, NV – This Saturday, Representative Steven Horsford will participate as a special guest in an Affordable Care Act Town Hall and Community Health Fair.

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Health Brain Trust’s “Making Good Health My Reality” tour is stopping in North Las Vegas for a daylong event that will prepare Nevada residents for the launch of the Affordable Care Act Health Insurance Marketplace on October 1. The event will include sessions on navigating the Medicaid and Health Insurance exchanges, understanding how Community Health Centers will meet the healthcare needs of underserved communities, and on helping small businesses and employees understand the benefits of the Affordable Care Act in terms of coverage.

The day will end with a community health screening fair where patients will receive free, on-site health screenings from certified healthcare providers. This event is free and open to the public.

9:00 – 9:15AM Welcome Breakfast and Greetings to the Health Town Hall. Congressman Steven Horsford and Congresswoman Donna Christensen will welcome participants to the Nevada “Making Good Health My Reality” Health Town Hall. The community health fair begins at 10:00 am and will run – concurrently during the informational sessions – until 3:00 pm. During the community health fair, participants will receive, free, on-site health screenings from certified health care providers from the health center community. Participants also will have the opportunity to receive important health and health care information that will help them to fully access existing and new health and health care options that will be available because of the Affordable Care Act.
9:30 – 10:30AM Session I: What is Happening in October 2013 and What Do I Need To Do To Get Ready? Moderator: Daniel Dawes, Morehouse School of Medicine. This session will focus on three major topics: Medicaid, the Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as the Health Insurance Exchange), and the role of patient navigators. Mike Willden, Director, Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, will talk about the Nevada Medicaid program and changes that will be made to the program’s eligibility requirements, as well as highlight the services that are covered under Nevada’s Medicaid program. Shawna DeRousse, Chief Operating Officer, Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, will talk about the Health Insurance Marketplace in Nevada and will explain the types of plans that are offered, the premium assistance subsidies and other pertinent information that participants need to know in order to prepare to select an insurance plan from Nevada’s Health Insurance Marketplace. Andres Ramirez will talk about the important role of patient navigators in helping individuals enroll in Medicaid and affordable, quality health insurance plans through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
10:45 – 11:45AM Session II: The Important Role of Community Health Centers as Your Medical Home and What Small Businesses Need to Know. Moderator: Daniel Dawes, Morehouse School of Medicine. During this session, Walter Davis, Chief Executive Officer, Nevada Health Centers will talk about the role that community health centers have and will likely continue to play in meeting the unique health and health care needs of underserved communities. Following that presentation, Ed Cadena, Nevada District Director, Small Business Administration, will share important information that small business owners and small business employees will need to know about the new health care reform law and the impact that it will have on small businesses’ efforts to expand affordable health care coverage to employees.
12:00 – 1:30PM Lunch and Community Health Q & A Town Hall. Participants, armed with the information they received in the previous sessions, will have the opportunity to engage in an interactive Q & A session. Congressman Steven Horsford and Congresswoman Donna Christensen will participate and will invite the audience to join in the community health fair, which will remain open until 3:00 pm.
