This can’t happen again

“The financial ratings agency Standard & Poor’s said Wednesday the shutdown “to date has taken $24 billion out of the economy,” equaling $1.5 billion dollars a day and “shaved at least 0.6 percent off annualized fourth-quarter 2013 GDP growth.” — ABC News, 10/17/2013

It took us two weeks to beat back Tea Party Republicans in Congress and get the government running again. Our country has been through an ordeal that sent as many as 800,000 federal employees home from work and brought us to the very brink of a disastrous default.

We’ve bought ourselves some time. But in January, will we be in the same place again?

We have to come together and get past these partisan battles. We need a sensible, long-term, fair budget plan that protects seniors and middle class families, creates much-needed jobs, and keeps our economy growing.

This bipartisan deal — though 16 days too late — shows that we can find common ground in the midst of seemingly hopeless gridlock. But we need to make it clear that this shutdown should not be repeated in January.

Tell Tea Party Republicans in Congress: This ridiculous shutdown should not be repeated. Add your name today.

Over the coming weeks and months I’m looking forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to preserve access to affordable health care and craft a budget that reflects our middle class priorities.

Thank you so very much for your support throughout this process.
